New Hire Information
Enrolling for Coverage
As an eligible employee, Gates automatically provides some benefits to you at no cost, while others you'll need to enroll and pay through payroll deductions.
When You're First Eligible
You become eligible for benefits coverage on the first day of the month following your date of hire. You must enroll within your first 30 days of employment. If you don't enroll during the first 30 days after your hire date, you will only be enrolled in the basic life and disability coverage that's automatically provided to you.
Changes to your 401(k) contributions can be made at any time by contacting our vendor, Charles Schwab. An information packet will be mailed to your home address and online access should be available a week after you receive your first paycheck.
If you are scheduled to work on your benefits effective date, but are absent from work on that day due to illness or injury, your coverage under benefits options in which you enrolled will become effective on the first day upon which you return to active employment. Other circumstances include:
- International Gates employees who transfer to the U.S. will be eligible for coverage on the first day on U.S. payroll.
- Benefits eligible employees who are laid-off will have all benefits restored on their first day of rehire if they are called back to work within 30 days from their last day work. Otherwise, if rehired beyond 30 days, the standard waiting period for eligibility will apply.
- The standard waiting period for eligibility applies to temporary employees on Gates payroll who become regular benefits-eligible employees.
